Dr George S. Giatsis

Dr. George Giatsis is a volleyball and beach volleyball teacher who specializes in Kinisiology with an emphasis on the vertical jump.  He was born in Thessaloniki on June 22, 1968. He teaches beach volleyball at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), Greece since 1999 and was elected  as  a Lecturer in Kinisiology of volleyball with emphasis on beach volleyball in 2009. Dr Giatsis conducts scientific research in a wide variety of areas of beach volleyball and volleyball within biomechanics, statistic, energy requirements, team performance and nutrition.

A native of Thessaloniki, Dr. Giatsis earned his bachelor's degree in physical education at A.U.Th D.P.E.S.S. in 1993. He obtained his Doctoral dissertation in 2004 from A.U.Th. The title of his thesis is “Biomechanical differences in elite beach-volleyball players in vertical jumps on rigid and sand surface”.

Dr. Giatsis has made numerous presentations and papers in scientific congresses and journals. Furthermore, he is an author of a beach volleyball handbook.
George Giatsis retired from beach volleyball as a player in 2006. He played almost 200 tournaments in national and international level since 1991. He had the all time career record of medals and participations in Hellenic Beach Volleyball History (1994 - 2006). He played in 52 finals with 25 victories. He finished 1st in Hellenic ranking at 2001 and 2002, 2nd at 1998 and 3 rd at 1999, 2003, 2004. His best international performance was a 2nd at Doha, Qatar, 1st at Tunis, 9th and 25th at European finals, 3rd in Balkan Championship and a 9th at FIVB Challenger.

Furthermore, he is involving with coaching in beach volleyball with various of players at FIVB and national level with a lot of Championships in all ages. He cooperated with National Federation of Volleyball in youth and junior program (2000-02).

Furthermore, he was the Head Coach in Volleyball teams since 1999. He captured with his teams the 1st position three times and the 2nd position two times. He was the Head Coach of Aris Thessaliki and Filathlitikos Thessaloniki (A1 women) on 2004 and 2005 respectively.
